FAMILY DAYS

Every Thursday during the summer holidays
See gallery admission prices / Under 18s go free

Our Family Days take place every Thursday during the school holidays. Our summer holiday dates are 25 July, 1 August, 8 August, 15 August, 22 August and 29 August.

The gallery will be full of creative activities and crafting stations, plus an artist-led workshop in our studio. We will take inspiration from our exhibitions by Elias Sime and Quentin Blake. Children go free and there’s no need to book – just turn up and enjoy!

This page will be updated throughout the summer with more details.

Thursday 25 July

In the studio, local artist Pip Johnson will be running a weaving workshop inspired by the intricate braided textures of Elias Sime’s work. We will be weaving into mini handheld looms, and a few other objects too. Around the gallery, you can make your own sketchbook, plait a bracelet or keyring, play art I-spy and write your own story for our noticeboard.

Thursday 1 August

We will be celebrating the RNLI’s 200th birthday with our neighbours at the Hastings Lifeboat Station.

Thursday 8 August

Grow your own! In the studio, decorate your own toilet tube plant pot and then plant your own baby herb, with artist Joseph Legg. In the galleries, help us draw a giant plant and make a beetle badge. Get your young curator stamp by helping us write new labels for our Elias Sime exhibition. Under the stairs there will be a sensory space for our youngest visitors.

Thursday 15 August

In the studio, artist Beth Rodway will lead a marbling workshop inspired by the colours and patterns of the sea. We will be making sea creature masks and mermaid tails and then using marbling techniques to add colours and textures. Around the gallery, take inspiration from Quentin Blake’s drawings to create a character, portrait or fantastical animal of your own.

Thursday 22 August

Cob Sculptures with Joseph Legg – we will make cob in the courtyard (weather permitting!) using mud, clay, straw and water. This will become our material to create sculptures or patterns inspired by nature. Participants can add natural found materials to their sculptures.

Thursday 29 August

In the studio, create paintings of marine life in watercolour using wax resist and salt texture techniques, led by artist Toya Walker. Around the gallery there will be sea-themed storytelling with Louisa and Simon (at 12pm, 1pm and 2.30pm), a ‘sew your own fish’ embroidery station, chalk drawings in the courtyard and a baby sensory area for ages 0-3.
