MERMAIDS

An exploration in drawing and painting

6pm–8pm
£35

Reimagine the mermaid and challenge notions of conventional beauty as you create your own mixed media artwork in this workshop led by artist Nicola Jones.

We are familiar with beautified depictions of mermaids in modern mainstream culture, but how might they really appear?

With readings from The Mermaid of Black Conch, along with historical descriptions challenging the popularised notion of standardised, human like beauty, as well as medieval drawings, participants will explore visual alternatives to reimagine the mermaid.

We will use wax resist with oil pastels overlaid with watercolour and gouache washes and throwing on a sprinkle of salt to visually imagine their own mermaids.

From material collected on the beach including a variety of seashells and seaweed, driftwood, crab skeletons, rope and nets, participants will explore textures and patterns that emerge within these objects to create layered artworks.

No experience is necessary and all materials are provided.
