£15 / £12 members
For Sussex Craft Week, join us in celebrating the rich heritage of Sussex’s traditional crafts. This event brings together expert artisans who are preserving endangered skills passed down through generations.
Through live demonstrations, storytelling and hands-on activities, discover the craftsmanship that shapes our cultural landscape.
- Net making and knot tying
Hastings, home to one of Britain’s oldest fishing ports, has a seafaring history that stretches back to Viking times. Local fishermen, who work on the Stade beach next to the gallery, will demonstrate the intricate techniques of net making and knot tying, and explain their enduring role within their fishing industry.
- Natural dyeing and block printing
Sarah Burns is a pattern maker and textile printer working in the South Downs with her partner Alice Garner. Together they hand block print textiles, mostly using natural dyes which they forage for in the woods and fields around Steyning. Their work is supported by the Endangered Craft Fund.
Last year they had their first solo show ‘The Art & Craft of Block Printing with Natural Dyes’ at Dartington Hall, the utopian community founded by Dorothy and Leonard Elmhirst. Sarah wrote the monograph on 1930s block printing duo, Phyllis Barron and Dorothy Larcher and has worked as a hand-printer at one of the last screen printing factories in England. She has designed for the Dartington Trust, Virginia White Collection and Cloth Collective and continues to design and teach widely.
- Sussex Trug making
Dominic Parette showcases the craftsmanship behind the iconic Sussex Trug – a traditional frame basket with roots in the 13th century.
Dominic is a Sussex based basketmaker, willow grower and teacher specialising in traditional frame baskets, organically woven willow forms and beautiful, strong plant supports. He sources willow, sweet chestnut, and hazel from local coppice and is committed to sustainable woodland management. Dominic is a member of the Basketmakers Association and the Heritage Crafts Association.
