Join the fun at HERRING, our new weekly after school club for 8-12 year olds on Thursday afternoons(for 5-7 year olds, check out Brill After School Art Club).

Over five weeks, children will explore new materials and techniques in a friendly and welcoming atmosphere, led by artist Molly Burrows.

This term, we will use professional art materials to explore expressive mark-making, clay, collage and wax resist. We will create hybrid sea creatures inspired by coastal stories, ‘future artefacts’ on clay tiles, and explore abstraction through the use of collage paper shapes.

Due to the capacity of our studio, it’s not possible for parents and carers to stay with children but coquina café will be open until 5pm for parents to enjoy a coffee and take in the view.

Week 1 – Expressive mark-making
Experiment with chalk, oil pastels, pens, and charcoal on large-scale paper. Create marks inspired by audio and ocean sounds, using movement and the whole body to explore different ways of drawing.

Week 2 – Sea myths
Explore coastal myths and stories, then create your own hybrid sea creatures using collage materials, inspired by mermaids and other legends.

Week 3 – Clay
Design and make small clay tiles as “future artefacts” or talismans, using shells and natural materials to create texture. (Pieces will be fired and returned in the final session.)

Week 4 – Abstraction
Look at artists working with abstraction and create collage responses to coastal scenes, experimenting with shape, composition, and simplified forms.

Week 5 – Water and environmental change
Explore ideas around weather, erosion, and marine life. Create wax resist artworks using crayon and ink, then reflect on work made across the course and revisit our sketchbooks.

All materials will be provided. All sales are final. We are unable to offer refunds.
Number of sessions: 5

Dates of sessions: Thursday 16 April, Thursday 23 April, Thursday 30 April, Thursday 7 May, Thursday 14 May
