Join artist Jo Pearl to hear about her creative process, learn about the hidden beings that live in the soil, and model your own soil microorganisms out of clay.

A campaigning ceramic artist, Jo is keen to share her joy and enthusiasm for her principal material – clay. Explore the tactile plasticity of clay that can be sculpted into almost any shape, including weird and wonderful ones like the microbes and minibeasts living in the earth, while discussing the issues Jo’s work addresses.

Plus a chance to watch Jo’s latest clay stop frame animation Dirty Secret, about soil health and the potential for regenerative agriculture to heal the soil.

MEET THE ARTIST

Jo Pearl

Jo Pearl is a multi-disciplinary artist, with a practice that combines clay animation and ceramic sculpture with a particular focus on soil microbes and ecological concerns. She is a member of the Royal Society of Sculptors, has exhibited in the UK and internationally, and her clay animated shorts have been shown and garnered awards at film festivals in the UK and abroad. Her work has been featured in exhibitions at Somerset House, Serralves Art Foundation in Porto, and is currently on display at Hastings Contemporary and the Royal Albert Memorial Museum and Art Gallery in Exeter, and will be on show at the National Gallery of Bulgaria in 2027.
