Still Life is Ordinary Life? Challenging the Assumptions
Learn to write about art with focused exercises, close reading and lively conversation.
This three-week course introduces the foundational skills needed to write thoughtfully and critically about art. You’ll learn how to craft precise, engaging language and develop the right approach and mindset for art criticism. We will analyse and write various forms of art texts, including exhibition reviews, museum wall labels, artist biographies, and catalogue essays.
This course follows on from last season’s writing workshops, and includes the following elements:
– A brief overview of the history of still life, why it has been considered a lesser genre in the canon of Western art, and how we can and should challenge that.
– Specific examples of still life and how to approach writing and describing them.
– Exhibition tour with specific highlights, aspects and what to look out for, with exhibition-specific writing tasks.
– Writing about the poetry of still life – bring all the threads together and conclusions.
Your tutor, Simon Hobson, is an experienced art consultant and translator with a background in writing and translating art theory, historical essays, artist features and art criticism.
