MESSAGES TO THE FUTURE
Filmmaking workshops
2.30pm-5pm
£40 per session or £110 for all three
Join us for three film workshops led by artist filmmaker Rebecca E Marshall, co-founder of Dear Future Films.
The workshops draw inspiration from our still life exhibition and are a space for slowing down, playfully observing and making a short film for someone you know now or in the future.
Session outlines:
- Friday 14 February – Ordinary / Extraordinary on Valentine’s day we will explore ideas of LOVE: What message would you like to send to the future about your experience of LOVE when it lies at the heart of your everyday? Who would you like to send it to?
- Friday 21 February – Wild / Cultivated will explore how nature has been categorised and labelled. What message would you like to send to the future about the benefits or dangers of trying to control and cultivate things that are wild by nature?
- Friday 28 February – Trace / Absence will explore how objects can form a vivid trace of an absent person. What objects have become important to you in this way? How can we see someone through the traces they have left, in the things they have left behind?
You will join Rebecca and build an individual ‘still life’ mini set, or diorama in a box using props and lights. You will use your smartphones (no previous skills necessary) as a creative tool to make short experimental film-clips of your set.
You will bring your own objects or found items to film, thinking about what each theme means to you. Photos, words, fabrics or any small objects are all fabulous. Rebecca will also bring small props to play with. We will look at the still life exhibition for ideas and inspiration. You will learn how to record sound effects and voice over.
Rebecca will take away your clips to edit together a short experimental film that you can use as your own message to the future. The workshops will culminate in a screening event on Friday 14 March.
This workshop is for adults. Participants do not need any previous filmmaking experience. Maximum spaces 8 per workshop. You are invited to attend all three sessions, or book them individually.
