This illustrated lecture, previously presented at the JW3 Cultural Centre in London, will start with a broad overview of David Bomberg’s work, beginning with drawings from his Slade period through to his geometric compositions and his new fusion of figuration. Bomberg developed a significant approach to painting and drawing which he referred to as the “spirit in the mass”, which will also be explored.

Nigel Caple studied with the painter Miles Richmond and continued to be tutored by Miles at various locations following graduation, including Ronda in Spain, Morley College in London and The Motor House in North Yorkshire. Miles was arguably one of Bomberg’s closest students and Nigel’s relationship with him continued until Miles’ death in 2008. A selection of Richmond’s works from his time with Bomberg at the Borough Group will illustrate his development – his paintings from Spain, London and Yorkshire revealing his exploration and reassessment of Bomberg’s influence on his practice as a painter. Samples of Caple’s works will demonstrate another generation working with an approach that has come through time, interpretation and research: Bomberg’s painting legacy progressing through two generations of artists to the present day.

Nigel Caple’s paintings are held in public collections in Britain and Japan. David Bomberg’s step-daughter Dinora Davies-Rees often supported Nigel’s practice as a painter as did the author, psychoanalyst and painter Marion Milner.

Nigel currently teaches and lectures in London and has recently moved to Hastings.
